A face mask or reverse headgear is used to bring the top jaw forward in those patients where the bottom teeth are in front of the top teeth. This appliance is normally used in conjunction with an upper expander to aid in the treatment. This appliance is used in patients as young as 7 years old as the window for treatment of this type of problem is relatively small. The face mask is worn when the patient is at home, after school and during bedtime. The more the face mask is worn, the quicker jaw correction is accomplished. The face mask should not be worn when swimming or during contact sports. The rubber bands should be changed every 3-4 days. Dr. Durbin will give you specific instructions on how to wear the face mask.
